Whether it’s status checkboxes or my own new column with checkboxes, when I make my text font nice and big, the checkboxes look tiny next to it. Changing font size of the new column doesn’t affect checkboxes. Is there a workaround, or something I’m missing?
Are you increasing the font size for all the text? If so, you could instead use the zoom function which will also scale the checkboxes. The zoom option is in the toolbar by default or under the View menu.

Thank you! I will try that. Yes, I was using three different font sizes throughout the file, but it seems like I could zoom and then adjust again at the end before printing/export.
