Move Backups out of ~/Documents

Hi,

(MacOS 15.3, OF 4.5.1 (v180.2.2))

How do I remove the ‘fake’ ~/Documents/Omnifocus/Backups folder from Finder, please?

It’s not a standard symlink, as far as I can tell, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to either turn this feature off, or at least redirect it to somewhere less obtrusive.

Thanks!

That’s something Finder is doing; the Backups folder isn’t actually in ~/Documents from the point of view of the filesystem itself. (You can see this by dragging the folder from Finder to a Terminal window to see the real path, which is over in our sandbox container: ~/Library/Containers/com.omnigroup.OmniFocus4/Data/Documents.)

On iOS, under Settings > Backups there’s an option to choose where your backups should go. (You can also choose whether they should happen automatically at all, and how many should be kept.) Perhaps bringing that setting to Mac would let you eliminate this distraction?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I knew that this wasn’t a standard symlink – the first thing I tried before posting was to try to find the symlink in Terminal. If there had been I’d have just deleted it and recreated it elsewhere with ln -s. It was the ‘only in Finder’ part which threw me… I also couldn’t drag it somewhere else in the Finder – it’s recreated automatically.

Thanks for the tip about the iOS version – I’ve done that and the iOS backups are now in iCloud.

Could you explain how to do this please? I’ve changed the setting on the iPad but it doesn’t seem to affect the Mac backup location – the backups are still being created ‘apparently’ under ~/Documents/Omnifocus/Backups and those folders only appear in Finder, and can’t be moved.

Or do you mean that you’ll consider being able to change the setting on the Mac in a future update?

Thanks again.

Sorry, yes, what I mean is that that’s a setting we should consider bringing to the Mac in a future update, and perhaps it will help address this issue (as well as being useful on its own).

That would be great – thank you for considering it!
