Nag Repeating Notification in OmniFocus 3

@kcase mentioned in his Omni Roadmap 2018 the desire to add a notification option that continually repeats until it is completed. I believe many use Due for this exact purpose. Does anyone know if this is still slotted for 2018?

Would love this so much. I keep due for this very reason for stuff I absolutely can’t forget to do. Would be really nice to consolidate all of that stuff in Omni.

I’m not knocking anyone who wants to consolidate, but I like having this in separate apps. Due comes to me when I need to do something and I go to OF when I want to do things.

I find it a nice differentiation.

There is some sense in keeping the two separate. Due often gets used for inconsequential items.

For example, when preparing for bed last night I wanted to remember to tell my wife something funny that happened during the day. But I didn’t want to interrupt getting-ready-for-bed to do it, and I didn’t want to forget. So I set a reminder for myself with Due 30 minutes in advance. Omnifocus would have been overkill.

A little more seriously: Sometimes in the morning, I think of something I need to do that evening – like I know I’m going to a community meeting after dinner, and want to remember to bring a thing for someone I’m going to see there. Reminder in Due.

This feature is still on our roadmap, but I don’t think it’s likely to be ready before the end of the year. Sorry!

Hi @kcase,

Thanks for the update, glad to hear it’s still planned!

For discussion sake, would you say it’s overkill within OmniFocus because of the steps required to input the data and notification timing compared to the “ease” of the same within Due?

That’s an interesting separation. Thanks for sharing!

I think that’s a big part of it. Also, OmniFocus seems like it should be for tasks that are more important.

I wouldn’t say I’m consistent about this kind of thing. I have OmniFocus tasks set up to take out the trash on trash night, and bring up the bins the next day.

Any update on timing for this feature? Thanks!

Due is a great app for sure, but you can already create your own nag feature using the Forecast view and a tag.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Create a TAG called Today

  2. Click on the Forecast view in the left Perspectives area

  3. In the upper right corner, click the eyeball to change view options for the outline

  4. In the area that says “Today shows items with this tag:”, enter Today

  5. Save your changes

Now when there is something you want to nag yourself about until it’s done, just add the Today tag to it and it will appear on an ongoing basis in your daily Forecast perspective until you complete it or remove the tag.

This should be enough of a nag, provided that you are using OmniFocus daily and from your Forecast perspective. If you need to create an OS X notification for it, that’s another story. But really this should be enough of a nag for most folks if your workflow is to work from your Forecast perspective.

HTH,
Adam

Hi @adamboettiger

This is the exact piece that is missing, specifically the nagging notification on the desktop/mobile/watch. I already have a similar Today view, however I’m looking for the repeating notification which is currently being performed in Due.

How about making the task repeat every certain number of hours ? That would be quite a bit of nagging, right? This is not a solution, just a potential (and imperfect) workaround.
