I have bought Omnifocus 2 to use on my macbook. I might possibly have been naive in expecting to be able to download the iPad/iPhone version for free. Am I correct in concluding that the versions for iPhone and iPad have to be bought separately? Without these versions it isn’t very handy for adding things on the fly…

OmniFocus 2 for iPad is a separate purchase. You also have the option of buying the in app purchase to get Pro features on the iPad.
If you buy the iPad version, you will be getting the universal version in a future update. The universal version will give you the option of using it on an iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad. OmniFocus 2 for iPhone will be slowly phased out favor of the universal version.
