New task: avoid setting default constraint "start no earlier than"

2020.08.08
4.0.2 (v205.7.0)

5 years past.
The bug still existed.

I too tried the post from @lizard in Oct '15, which didnā€™t really work for me as I donā€™t want automatically leveled resources. I did however find a working solution that doesnā€™t hide the constraints ā€œunder the carpetā€ as suggested by @ains in Jul '19.

  1. Set Project > Automatically Level Resources where you want it, ON or OFF.
  2. Turn OFF Project > Level Resourcesā€¦ > Donā€™t schedule any task before today.
  3. Clear the Project > Current Editing Dateā€¦ field ā€“ donā€™t set it to todayā€™s date. It will default to 12/31/00 next time you open the dialog, and you can always set it again if you need.

It is step #3 that finally fixed the problem for me. I donā€™t set it to todayā€™s date, rather I clear the date completely. Iā€™m then able to add tasks by default without the ā€œstart no earlier thanā€ constraint, but can still see those tasks where the constraint is set.

Dear all,

As long as this ā€œfeatureā€ hasnā€™t been corrected, here are some things I discovered.
Pasting task names:

  • Copy a number of task names you from a (Keynote) table.
  • Paste them into a new project which has a Start Date in the past.
  • These tasks will be on the correct Start Date (?!?)
Reset the current date back to today:
  • Go to Project > Current Editing Dateā€¦
  • Type literally Today and hit OK.
Work-around to put a new task immediately on the Project Start Date:
  • Duplicate the current task (cmd+D)
  • Hit Tab to select its task name
  • Type the new task name

Hope this has helped.
