Recent releases of OmniFocus appear to have changed the behavior of the outline view with respect to the notes fields. As selection of a task changes, the notes field now appears to show by default where previously one had to expand it manually. I much prefer the old behavior, but can understand where some might like the new. Is there a hidden toggle somewhere that controls this behavior?
In the view options you have below Set Display Fields the Preview Notes in Outline option. Turn that off, that should do it. Then there‘s the Notes option in Set Editing Fields that you should not forget as well.

I was having trouble finding the “Preview Notes” option mentioned above. Maybe a subsequent update changed this. In any case, for anyone similarly struggling, here’s where I found it.
It is called “Show note automatically” in the “Set Editing Fields” Fluid defaults in the “Outline” tab of the “Layout” preferences pane. Despite the location of this preference, it applies to the Column Layout as well.
