OF on Apple Watch - App issue

I just got an apple watch and have installed the app and setup per documents. The issue is that the app will only show the Welcome, to get started please open Omnifocus on your iPhone.

I have done this to no avail. Do I need to uninstall on both devices and start over?

I went ahead and uninstalled on both and re-installed. Had same issue until I added a new item to the inbox and cleared it.

that trick works, even in 2018

Any ideas what can be done if the trick with creating new item not working?
