Red hints at the app icon
I find the displayed red hints helpful.
When I open Omnifocus, however, you can see that the appointment is only yellow.
Is there a way to display this date in yellow in the icon and then in red if it is critical?

No, unfortunately. The operating system only lets us choose a number to get displayed as a badge on our app. We can’t provide a color or any sort of label that would help clarify what the number is about.
However, we do have a lot more control over what is displayed in our app widgets. So if you put an OmniFocus Forecast widget on your home screen, you can see a better indication of the due states of today’s tasks (and can even list some of them).
