Compact layout: displays info on one line w/status circles on the left [Edit: Now available in 2.3! OmniFocus Preferences ▸ Layout ▸ Custom Columns]

I am sorry to bother this highly important thread with my nerdy botherings, but I just so in case checked off my first little checkbox and flagged my first minuscule flag and I am so giddy and happy about it!
Thank You Omni for sneaking this in and to all of You fellow- condensed Omni users- raise Your glasses! We are getting what we are asking for, Omni delivers!!!

I have totally missed the compact layout somehow!!! This is so much better! Thanks

OF2 for iPhone was a great improvement but I expected more from OF2 for Mac. With the possible exception of forecast view, the changes since OF1 are cosmetic and not entirely successful. In standard view, tasks take up too much vertical space. The alternative compact layout helps but the check circles are too small; the repeating ellipsis symbol is almost invisible. Scrolling stutters on new hardware. The search and replace function has been broken since the beta - if it’s going to stay broken, why not just remove it? I am worried about the way OmniFocus is going so I think had better avoid buying the iPad version until the Mac version is fixed.

Oh how I wish my ⌘shiftL would work [to flag actions/projects]. I’ve searched high and low, but for some reason, this key combo does nothing for me anymore. This is true in all other programs as well. So sad.

check System preferences/keyboard/shortcuts for any global entries of this combination- it can be at times that newly installed software is abducting shortcuts so they turn ineffective.

@mat_rhein Good call my fellow nerdist. However, I’ve scoured that list at least 10 times. No bueno. I did find the same shortcut key used by Services > Text > Lowercase, but turned it off a long time ago.

I even reset PRAM and SMC. And checked some key binding .dict files. Sigh. I’m doubting the geniuses can fix it. But maybe I need to make an appt. (Don’t mean to hijack this thread. If there is a way for me to start a new one based on this, I can.)

Sounds weird… Sorry to hear this- please get back here in case you are able to unveil the mystery! Cheers!

I’ve just enabled the compact view and, while it is an improvement, personally I think it is still not there yet.

Maybe it has to do with the way I use OmniFocus (I use the app more like a ToDo list without context or due dates), but it would be great if the app could cater to many different user usage styles.
As you can see from the attached screen shot below, the current compact view results in a whole lot of unnecessary whitespace to the right of list items. So while the compact view improves the excess vertical whitespace (seen in normal view), it turns into excessive horizontal whitespace.

A simple solution might be to allow users to switch off these options (context & due dates) or a more elegant solution where the options for due dates/context appear when hovering over an item.

Any thoughts?

I’m running into issues in that I can’t see the circles to click on to complete tasks in either compact or the older view. They are too light!

I´m having a little problem after the new update. I´m using the compact layout from the link below and when I click on a task to flag it nothing happens. Is this happening to anyone else ?

if you have the task selected, you can tap the space bar to mark the task as complete.

The compact mode is still an experimental feature that hasn’t been fully implemented. The radius for mouse clicking might be very small and harder to click.

Yosemite was always too light for my comfort. I went to system preferences > accessibility to set the contrast to normal and reduce transparency. That might help you.

I’ve done that. It helps but still way too light.

I’ve been extremely lucky to find this post. The density of information available beforehand I felt was always lacking and now I can successfully fit 2-3x the number of items on a list. This makes scanning much easier especially with larger more complicated projects.

Being a keyboard-focused user I don’t have an issue with the circles or flags. I think visually they should rearranged to be side-by-side. If the flag indicator was moved to the strip on the far left of the item (like it is in the perspective sidebar) that would be best. Alternatively you could stack it so that flag and circle are right next to each other (and in that order, circle flag doesn’t make sense to me).

So…this is a weird edge case, but I believe that something in the compact view crashes Dragon Dictate whenever it’s unmuted. I know this isn’t really a you problem, but it seemed worth mentioning.

Is there plans to have the context column back as well and be able to simply click on the column headers to sort a-z and z-a again? That would be so helpful! Add that and styles back and I could finally make the complete jump to OF2.

@kcase Are there plans to continue working on the compact layout? I use it but there continue to be many bugs and usability issues. Wondering whether to return to OF1 or wait for improvements here?

Coming soon (probably):

Thanks Ken for confirming the bug where the tab key skips past the defer date. A year has passed since then and I’m hitting this bug every day. Is there any prospect of a fix for this?

Yes the tab problem is very irritating and the fact it’s gone unfixed for so long is disappointing and doesn’t live up to the sort of quality I’ve come to expect from Omni.
